Pixies dropped their latest studio album The Night the Zombies Came today via BMG, pulling listeners deeper into their strange and subversive universe. The album closes with ‘The Vegas Suite,’ a trippy, sci-fi-tinged ode inspired by the 1950s standard ‘Que Sera, Sera’—a fitting companion to their earlier cover of the same song, which came as part of their first 2024 release, ‘You’re So Impatient.’

“The closing track of the record is based on the song ‘Que Sera, Sera’, a standard written in the 1950s. We originally did a version of it for a television programme about not zombies but monster sci-fi creatures. So we thought ‘How can we make this fit into this sci-fi monster setting?’ I did not know that this was going to end up on the record. But then when our producer Tom Dalgety went to mix the record, he stuck it on, and it was the perfect closing credits to a record called ‘The Night the Zombies Came’.” – Black Francis

Counting their 1987 mini-LP Come On Pilgrim, this is the band’s tenth album and their first new music since 2022’s Doggerel. Early reviews are already glowing, with MOJO calling them “the most thrillingly deathly of bands” and celebrating their ability to remain vital after decades of redefining alternative rock.

For their new album, Pixies reunited with longtime collaborator Tom Dalgety, whom drummer David Lovering now calls “a fifth Pixie.” Dalgety, who shaped the sound of Head Carrier (2016), Beneath the Eyrie (2019), and Doggerel (2022), returned to the producer’s chair at Guilford Sound in Vermont.

The album also marks the arrival of bassist Emma Richardson from Band of Skulls—the first Brit to join the Pixies lineup. Meanwhile, guitarist Joey Santiago steps further into the spotlight, building on his lyrical debut in Doggerel. Santiago wrote the lyrics to Hypnotised in the form of a sestina, a complex poetic riddle that hints at the band’s ongoing ambition to bend conventions, even in their most chaotic moments.

Pixies will also return to the road next year with a 20-date headline tour through the UK and Europe in April and May. The tour features nine UK stops, highlighted by two nights at the iconic O2 Academy Brixton—promising to be a mix of new sounds and timeless chaos.

Pixies will head for New Zealand and Australia in November 2024 for stadium gigs with Pearl Jam, closing a monumental year for one of the world’s most influential, revered, and deeply adored bands.
