Hobart post-punk heroes, The Native Cats, have just released hard-hitting new song, My Risks Is Art along with an accompanying new video ahead of the November 10 release of 5th album, The Way On Is The Way Off,
The Native Cats’ Chloe Alison Escott (vocals, electronic programming) and Julian Teakle (bass) have been making and recording music since 2009, and The Way On Is The Way Off marks their first recording for Chapter Music.
The new track, My Risks Is Art is a chest-pounding, rhythm-driven song which sees Teakle laying the foundation with a thunderous bass-line, which is surprisingly joined by the addition of heavy-hitting drums from Ben Simms (of A Swayze & The Ghosts fame). Vocally and lyrically, we see Escott at her ascerbic best.
She says “I rarely set out to write assertions of queer defiance on purpose — for this one I initially just wanted to write about somebody losing at roulette but then making all their money back by selling the roulette table with the exact placement of their chips on it as a work of modern art — but I’m always pleased to accidentally end up there. Saying it louder with each passing year: whether it’s trans rights or whether it’s anything else, never, ever, ever give an inch to the centre-right.”
The single comes with a great video directed by Chloe and Izzy Almaz. “This is my fifth time making a video with Izzy Almaz and I hope we do fifty more,” says Chloe. “Jini Maxwell provided some fantastic illustrations and also convinced me to stick with the concept when I was afraid I didn’t have the range to pull it off. There’s a lot of passion and long-held intention in this video; there’s also a lot of severe scheduling constraints and happy accidents. I like to think we’ve stirred it all together vigorously enough that it’s not easy to tell which is which“.
The album, The Way On Is The Way Off will be available from November 10th as a digital download, red vinyl LP and/or black vinyl LP. Get your pre-orders here.
