Shoegaze and grunge risers Sungaze release their anticipated self-titled third album.
Cavernous reverbs, fuzzy guitar tones and melancholic melodies make for an album which harks back to classic shoe-gaze whilst holding a current in-fitting flare among the 90s resurgence.
The album kicks off with the ethereal opener ‘Time Is On The Wind’ and culminates in the reflective ‘World Won’t Wait,’ offering listeners a diverse musical journey. Split evenly between heavier, grunge-influenced tracks and lighter, dreamy melodies, Sungaze showcases the band’s impressive range. From its intense, abrasive walls of sound to its most delicate acoustic moments, the album reveals the band’s willingness to challenge musical conventions and embrace emotional vulnerability.
“We like to think of this album as a ‘coming of age’ album,” the band shared. “The songs are more personal and direct than we’ve written in the past, and each track details major life themes we’ve experienced over the past few years. As with any coming-of-age story, there’s been a lot of soul-searching and self-acceptance that needed to happen for this album to come to life.”
Sungaze is the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Ian Hilvert and vocalist Ivory Snow, who have been steadily building a reputation since their debut full-length in 2019. Drawing from a wide range of influences, their music explores complex emotions and the fleeting nature of feelings, all while maintaining an ethereal and dreamlike quality. While Hilvert and Snow are the core creative duo, the band expands to a six-piece for their live performances, featuring Snow’s sister Angela Colvin on bass and backing vocals, Zach Starkie on rhythm guitar, Charlie Hausfeld on keys, and Justin Van Wagenen on drums.
