It’s been a cruel day for the Australian music community, Splendour in the Grass, the iconic beacon of the nation’s festival scene, has been abruptly cancelled for 2024. The news comes as a heavy blow, especially after the previous cancellations this year of GTM and Falls Festival, amongst others.
For years, Splendour has been a crucible of artistic expression, where the verdant fields of Byron Bay come alive with the pulsating rhythms of eclectic beats and the fervent energy of impassioned crowds. The cancellation is a stark reminder of the fragility of the Australian music industry. Politicians like Cate Faehrmann have spoken about the cumbersome regulatory framework that exists in NSW, in particular.
“Over the last few years the live music industry in NSW has been dealt blow after blow. The fact that one of Australia’s biggest music festivals is unable to sustain itself any longer should be a massive warning to the NSW government that without urgent intervention, live music as we know and love it will never recover.

The promoters have said “We will be working hard to be back in future years.”
We at Backseat Mafia fervently hope that the festival will make a triumphant return sooner than later, once again igniting the vibrant spirit of creativity and unity that has long defined this cherished event.
