Chicago-based cult band Pulsars have announced the long-awaited digital release of their self-titled debut album, PULSARS, set to arrive on streaming platforms on November 15th. Today, the band has released the 3 track single ‘Trilogy’, comprising the first three tracks from the album.
The digital release is more than just a reissue—it represents the culmination of a journey fraught with missed opportunities and what-ifs. Pulsars were on the verge of breaking out after signing a multi-million, three-album deal with Almo Sounds in the late 90s, alongside the critical success of their debut LP. However, their momentum stalled when Almo Sounds’ deal with Geffen Records fell apart, leaving the band without support just as their music was beginning to make waves.
Their album, originally released in 1997, was met with glowing praise from music critics. Rolling Stone would later declare Pulsars one of the “40 Greatest One-Album Wonders” a bittersweet honor that underscored their untapped potential. The album drew on influences from post-punk, synth-pop, and 80s rock, blending retro sounds with a modern sensibility, much like contemporaries such as The Pixies and The Cure.
The band, formed by brothers Dave and Harry Trumfio, had positioned themselves at the forefront of the 90s alternative rock scene, opening for major acts like Oasis, Blur, and Weezer, and garnering a cult following along the way. Their unique sound, a fusion of post-punk melancholy and synth-pop exuberance, set them apart from the more abrasive bands of their Chicago hometown like Big Black and Jesus Lizard. Drawing from influences like Cheap Trick and layering in the melodic drive of 80s new wave, Pulsars delivered a sound that was both nostalgic and ahead of its time.
Though the band’s initial breakthrough was cut short, both Dave and Harry went on to make their marks in the music world. Dave Trumfio has since become a highly regarded producer and studio engineer, working with acts such as Billy Bragg, Wilco, OK Go, and Built to Spill, among others. But for the brothers, there was always a sense of unfinished business with Pulsars.
Now, 27 years later, the digital release of their debut album feels like a chance to complete the story they started. Speaking about the release, the band emphasized their excitement at finally bringing the music to streaming platforms for both longtime fans and a new generation of listeners to discover. With high-profile fans like actor Keanu Reeves and comedian Fred Armisen singing their praises, the release could reignite interest in a band that, for too long, remained a hidden gem of the 90s alternative scene.
For many, this digital release will be a long-overdue victory lap for a band that never had the chance to fully capitalize on its initial success. And for Pulsars themselves, it represents a moment to reclaim the legacy of an album that has stood the test of time, waiting for its rightful moment in the spotlight.
