Singer-songwriter Pat Donnelly releases his anticipated new album, Reading You Closely.
Ten tracks of emotionally charged and introspective songwriting and soundscapes which blend elements of pop-punk and indie-rock with vibrant pop melodies, the album delivers accessible, commercial songwriting whilst highlighting some heartfelt, emotional songwriting.
Donnelly’s musical journey began in his teenage years, when he was first captivated by the raw energy of nu metal. The discovery ignited his passion for music and led him to pick up the guitar, but it was his later embrace of pop punk, particularly through Blink-182, that shaped his sound to date. This is inherently clear across the new album which brings the same sense of energy as across Blink-182’s catalogue with driving guitars and tight, snappy, fast-paced drums but topped with a softer, more emotionally driven lead vocal.
Highlights from the album include the high octane opener ‘Daddy’s Little Princess’ which thematically tackles personal narratives with raw emotional honesty, exploring the complexities of family relationships. ‘The Stars Still Sparkle’ delivers a gentle, stripped back ballad which contrasts the more obviously pop-punk writing of songs like ‘Fade of Summer’ and ‘Here You Go Again’.
Across Reading You Closely, Donnelly blends his pop punk roots with inspirations from classic songwriters like Billy Joel and Peter Gabriel. The result is an album that bridges punk’s raw energy with melodic hooks and introspective lyricism, reflecting Donnelly’s personal growth as both an artist and a storyteller. At the heart of the album are themes of loss, grief, and human connection. Intimate yet fun and packing a infectious sense of energy and at times joy, the album is a radiant example of Donelly’s abilities.
