Scottish alternative rock band Midnight Ambulance have released their new single ‘Smoke and Sweets’. The duo of lead vocalist and drummer Amelia and guitarist Fraser produce the most glorious music, with a soundscape that simply envelopes. Amelia’s vocals are “stop you in your tracks” breath-taking and this song is no exception. What starts quietly and calmly with a haunting beat and those captivating vocals very quickly builds. Fraser has electronic pads on his guitar which add a dimension to the duo’s sound. His electric guitar riffs are full of static and give an emotional quality, which beautifully accompany Amelia’s vocal. But then mid-track in comes the drums. The power shift up in scale and how on earth Amelia plays the drums and sings I have no idea! The duo began collaborating over lockdown and this is their fourth single. They say of ‘Smoke and Sweets‘:
“We had loads of fun recording and experimenting with this one, screaming into guitars and hitting bins over at North Road Studios. It’s a song about feeling detached from reality, isolated and falling into a surreal alternative place, and who you trust in that vulnerable state…so the usual happy and uplifting themes from us!”
Midnight Ambulance will be supporting Leeds band Eades at Edinburgh’s Sneaky Petes on Monday 8 August. Highly recommended.
