Brand new to the Big Crown family but already proving to be a perfect fit, Melbourne’s self-proclaimed ‘cinematic soul journeymen’ Surprise Chef are serving up a special blend of jazz, soul and hip-hop, with a generous side of psyche, soundtrack and folk folded in. The delicious result is the pure groove of instrumental debut Velodrome. The group are also preparing to share their cool, moody shades of funk live, for the first time, with European audiences in August. It’s a long, long way from the Coburg Drive-In.
Big Crown is proud to present the work of their newest signing, declaring that ‘Surprise Chef’ caught their ear with their unique sound. ‘Velodrome’ comes to life with a satisfying, heavy drum break and an earworm synth line guaranteed to stay with you long after the song is over. The multi-layered arrangement shows the quintet’s music prowess, as well as a knack for cool subtlety.
The centrepiece of the College Of Knowledge Records roster, Surprise Chef’s output reflects a meticulous appreciation of 70’s soul, touching on the legacies of composer/producers David Axelrod and Isaac Hayes, also taking wondrous cues from labels Daptone and Truth & Soul.
After years of setbacks and reschedules, Surprise Chef are finally heading to the UK/EU in August! Show tickets are now on sale, with more dates to be announced shortly.
