Keekai is set to take his passion to new heights with the release of his long-awaited single, ‘Thunder’.
Combining a sense of other-worldly through it’s rich electronics reflected agains the naturalistic vocal deliver, the track balances it’s 80s nostalgia with a striking, Jai Paul-esque modernity. Each melody cascades down on the listener, creating an all-surrounding transcendence. The rich and gorgeous synth design, featuring delicate arpeggios and powerful chord stabs, perfectly complements Keekai’s compelling, melodic performance.
On his upcoming EP, Keekai shared, “This EP coexists with trauma and love. It is fabulous, broken, funny, triumphant. All the in-betweens. At once, lost in the understanding of love, but now finding power in its grand capacity to love. To be able to exist in these two modes and to find power in them is what makes this new iteration of my music so alluring and true. It is intentional in its practice of self-love and the romance of others. It is a voice that giggles, swoons, begs, cries, and yearns. A voice that wants love and is surrounded by it.”
Keekai, the musical identity of Roberto Sy, is a queer Filipinx singer and songwriter who synthesizes fearless expression and energy, heartbreak and acceptance. His music pairs vocal layers inspired by powerhouse R&B idols with shimmering synths and beaming pads, reminiscent of Manila’s disco scene and Japanese city-pop. Keekai weaves emotion with a physical pulse and thump, capturing scenes of honesty and intimacy in relationships and queerness. Topics of in-betweenness and unspoken woes trickle through his songs, revealing a complex but tender individual.
