First Day of Spring unveil the hotly anticipated EP Be My Hospital.
Delving even deeper into themes of melancholy, loss, and the struggle for creative fulfilment, the EP delivers reflective, intimate lyricism over driving guitar led backdrops. With moments that are comparable to Slowdive, and others which are closer to The National and Doves, the band showcase some beautiful musicality across the EP.
From the elegant picked guitars and atmospheric vocals of ‘You’re Blue I’m Blue’ to the tight soundscape, beautiful tones and boxy vocals of ‘The Rising Tide’, to the contemplative mood of the EPs closer ‘On Monday’, the EP captures an honest, heartfelt intimacy carried through its gentle, emotive vocals and intricate beautifully constructed instrumentation.
In an introspective dive into their creative process, the band shared that By My Hospital reflects their ongoing struggle with the balance between artistic fulfillment and the pressures of creative practice. “Some of the themes running through songs like ‘On Monday’ are centered around being a visual artist and songwriter,” they explained, “feeling profoundly disillusioned in your creative practice when figuring out whether or not the work is the most enjoyable part of it or that real success is to never have to work a day in your life.”
By My Hospital is a bold step forward for First Day of Spring, a project that not only builds on the foundations set by their debut album Fly Over Apple Blossom but also pushes their sound into new, emotionally rich territories. Blending post-punk influences with alt-90s nostalgia, the band offers a cathartic and resonant experience, taking listeners on a journey through the darker aspects of human emotion, only to emerge with a renewed sense of optimism.
