After a whirlwind summer, Adelaide-based folk-pop artist Sofia Menguita releases here EP, Growing Pains.
A 5 track collection of intimate songwriting and warming organic sonic textures, the tracks capture a youthful flair whilst Menguita displays her ability to capture a raw and heartfelt emotional depth as her lyricism journeys through heartbreak and resilience. With raw vulnerability and honesty at its core, Growing Pains explores the trials and tribulations of navigating youth, touching on themes of family and young love.
Opening with the gentle, piano ballad ‘Dad Song’, before moving to the full band-come-acoustic folk led sound of ‘Puddle Jumping’, Sofia quickly demonstrates the range of her songwriting. Layering gentle acoustic guitars and smooth, breathy harmonies on ‘Dan’ and ‘If You’, the EP ends with the indie-folk approach of ‘I’ve’. Comparable to early Lucy Rose, the EP is wonderfully personal and fragilic, showcasing writing and performances that bring substance and warmth.
Speaking about the EP, Sofia explains: “This record was written about navigating through relationships and adversity as a young, father-less, teenage girl. It is a re-introduction to the music scene, authentic to who I am and how I feel. I was inspired by the production of Pinegrove’s ‘Skylight’, and the delicate-ness of ‘Sling’ by Clairo. I had the pleasure of working on it with my partner, Matthew Burgess, who also produced the single ‘Everyone I’ve Ever Loved’. He understood and took care of my vision, so it’s safe to say that this is my most favourite project to date”
