Experimental newcomer ævina shines on the ethereal and haunting single ‘Daily Dose of Danger’.
Cinematic with its use of atmosphere and haunting melodies, the track pulls listeners into ævina’s mystical world with its haunting lo-fi magnetism, driven by delicate, emotive and effortlessly captivating vocals. Built around a backbone of a single reverb tinted ukulele the track is surrounded by layers of haunting synth pads, a swelling synth bass and dappled twinkles, showcasing a brilliant feel for mixing organic elements with electronics.
Creating an eerie atmosphere that feels both familiar and alien, the ethereal vocals, often harmonised with ævina’s ‘Satellite Sister,’ collaborator Ari Inez, add layers of delicacy and power, pulling listeners deeper into the intricacies of the soundscape. Unsettling yet oddly beautiful, the track is comparable to the likes of Portishead and early FKA Twigs.
The upcoming video for the single brings to life The Ukulelian, a persona that embodies the surreal and philosophical underpinnings of ævina’s artistry. Described by the artist as hatching from an “arachnidian egg” and blending the characteristics of a “chain-smoking femme fatale” and a “monstrous Nosferatu,” The Ukulelian is a critique of the perfectionism and elitism ævina has encountered in the music world.
Speaking on the persona of The Ukulelian, ævina shares, “She is my brainchild, designed as a rebuttal to the pervasive perfectionism and elitism I’ve come up against in the music scene. I stand behind the ukulele on a philosophical and spiritual level. While it’s often dismissed for being too easy or out of tune, I argue that imperfect music is often more compelling than polished perfection. The ukulele’s accessibility is a virtue, and I frequently find myself proselytizing on her behalf. There is no more potent antidepressant on the market.”
