Listen up, if you want more proof that the world jazz and dancefloor connection is still generating some mighty powerful sounds look no further than the exuberant ten piece collective that is TC & The Groove Family. Pulled together by drummer/percussionist Tim Cook and nurtured on eclectic and electric Leeds scene, this bunch of jazzers, turntablists and rhythm makers will be introducing themselves with their debut album ‘First Home’(out on Worm Discs, June 10th).
Taking a nu-jazz/UK jazz starting point but stirring things up with a whirl of influences from afrobeat, funk, latin fusion, dub, jungle and post punk clatter, this band’s music looks set to make an impact. The first single from the album, ‘Bossfight’, justifies the gathering excitement with its pulsating drive and drilled aggression. A song that swerves confidently from pumping horn riffs and stampeding carnival rhythms to Pariss Elektra’s razor sharp vocal rhymes, it’s some announcement – focused, direct and packing a weighty political punch. There’s even a juddering mid-tune skronk out that screams classy and math-rock guitar rips to finish.
With a string of dates this summer around the festival circus (including We Out Here, Green Man, Blue Dot, Secret Garden Party and Shambala) it looks like plenty of people will get the message and be joining up with TC & The Groove Family soon.
