What started of as a fictional band in the cult vampire film ‘Afflicted’ has now turned into a real EP releasing duo. Comprising of musicians Edo Van Breemen and Zachary Grayth the now real Unalaska join ‘Light Organ Records’ to bring us their first self-titled EP. Working through cross-continental correspondence from their separate studios in Brooklyn and Vancouver they’ve pieced together a sound that mixes the duo’s seemingly disparate styles into a spooky, loopy, chorused-out post-cinematic groove.
‘Unalaska’ is a dark and brooding collection of rock and electronica taking us through layered sound scapes lead by guitar riffs and ghostly reverberated vocals. At times there are reflections of Brian Eno in its arrangement and the way the music lifts in parts but keeps its underlying air of melancholy. A well orchestrated first EP which leaves you in no doubt of the Unalaska sound. Favourite track for me on this one is ‘Fallows’ with its effected vocals and experimental feel that goes deeper and deeper into the abyss as it progresses.
