EP: Twins – Solid State Skin

Out this past Monday on Bravura Records, the label of London producers Kid Who and Andrew Yukon, was the new EP from TWINS, aka Matt Weiner. If you think you recognise that name, you’d probably be right – he’s the label owner at CGI Records and DKA Records. As well as producing music under his TWINS alias, he’s released music under his own name – long players dropping through labels such as Ruralfaune and Clan Destine.

The new EP, titled ‘Solid Skin EP’ opens with IIIII (five eyes). It bubbles with 303 funk right from the off, throwing in some (alas) short-lived 808 claps (they do appear here and there throughout the track), as these other acid lines run through the foreground. Underneath, there’s a multitude of pads and cymbal work, as the track morphs constantly, through darker and harder edges, but always retaining that little bit of acid for the journey.

Helpless again bubbles, its rickety bassline being swamped by sampled drums, bongos and huge toms as overhead there is a myriad of strange sounds and eerie synths. In contrast Plugged again opts for the funk-filled basslines (you won’t find any complaints here) and over the top the dark clouds pass with tension filled bleeps and stabs the order of the day.

Final track Heartbleed sees the skies clear and this Detroit style minimal house come to the forefront, these hazy chords and ice cool string sounds decorating the increasingly agitated percussion. In comes the trademark bassline, jumpy and off-kilter, giving the track this darkly brilliant feel.

Previous Meet: The TUTS, fresh from their support slot to The Selector
