If not hot on the heels, then certainly warming the socks of fellow Warp Records and electronic music genius Aphex Twin, Squarepusher has announced details of his new album Damogen Furies, which comes out on 20th April. Talking about the record Tom Jenkinson, aka Squarepusher says “Through this record I aim to explore as forcefully as possible the hallucinatory, the nightmarish and the brutally visceral capacities of electronic music.”
Its another (albeit slight) left turn, or indeed turn around for the artist who throws in elements of just about everything, including, often his own live (and underrated) bass playing. It opens with this hard edged bass mixed with fluttering electronics, before he adds this melodic synth line that constantly appears after the beat, but add some direction to the music, as well as adding something to hang your coat on (or whistle along to). As with all his work though, its constantly rearranging and growing and morphing, lines and sounds and ideas come and go thick and fast. At the heart of it though remains this actually rather lovely melody. The old softy.
Squarepusher has also announced an extensive worldwide tour, debuting a whole new dynamic visual show and premiering material from the new album. Following the success of the inaugural (sold out) show at the Barbican, a new London date has been announced for the 24th October at the Troxy.
