I don’t watch much TV myself anymore. Not quite sure when it happened, but I know why. Most of what’s on is shit and I got sick of adverts telling me what to do, what to wear, what to eat. I’m don’t think I’m alone in this disdain for modern TV and the advertisement break, I know at least One Eyed Wayne feel the same.
Their latest single ‘After The Break’ is a brilliantly observed slash and burn attack on futile TV programmes and the ads in between. It tells a pretty accurate tale of getting in from work and just wanting to relax, but instead you’re bombarded by crap from ‘TV hosts with roast potato skin’ and ‘Iggy on insurance, Johnny on the spread.’ Penned by singer/songwriter, Steve Donaghue, it’s a fine combination of punk-poetry set to music, street core at its best…
One Eyed Wayne are a five piece from Hornsey, London, featuring, amongst others, Dean Leggett from 80’s indie bands BOB and Carter USM. They all started off jamming together around two years ago. Stuff first started to happen when they recorded ‘1234’. This was picked up and given some air time my Tom Robinson, which in turn lead on to it spending eight weeks at the top of the Strummerville chart, thus guaranteeing a slot at the Strummer Of Love festival.
After that it made sense for them to carry on writing and performing. They’ve built up quite a following and have continued to get praise and airplay from the likes of Gideon Coe, and Chris Hawkins. With their first album due for release sometime in November, it looks like One Eyed Wayne are headed in the right direction.
The video for ‘After The Break’ is out at the end of month and features Liam Young from XFM. Keep an eye out for it appearing on here, and you can rest assured it won’t be interrupted by ads.
