Out right now via the consistently brilliant Tru Thoughts is the new digital single from Ben Lamdins crew of jazz warriors and producers, aka Nostalgia 77. Measures / Island In The Sun are both taken from the second album under his Nostalgia 77 and The Monster guise, also called Measures, which came out back in December last year.
Backed by a superstar band including bassist Riaan Vosloo who contributed six original compositions to the album, alongside Kit Downes (piano), James Allsopp (reeds), Fulvio Sigurta (trumpet), and Tim Giles (drums). Measures lays down this bass / drum groove which this angular piano integrates itself, gradually becoming freer and more ambitious as the track wears on. The topping comes in the shape of the brass and reeds who work both together homogeneously and weaving in and out of eachother.
The other track is a version of Sun Ra’s Island in the Sun. It has this slightly eastern bent with Indian Bells and assorted percussion showering the track with something different. In the foreground the reeds whisper away, whilst the piano splashes its rippling figures all over the top as they gradually come together to work together.
