Being hailed as “one of the finest emerging songwriters around” Natalie McCool is set to release her new single on the 22nd of April (Tri-Tone), Layered vocals open over steady beats that march on to join a smooth bass line as the track builds to a wonderful crescendo that ends abruptly with a short melancholy distant piano. The uplifting and rousing chant of “Let’s build a Fortress, and we’ll hold up the wall, Let’s build a Fortress and we’ll never fall” is so full of hope and promise and sung with complete conviction that it really gets to where I believe it was intended to go…..to the heart. In these cynical times I think we’re all a bit tired of the insincere bullshit that’s pedalled as true emotion in pop, this track feels genuine and written with a bit if care. This one left an impression.
Have a listen.
April and May will see Natalie McCool head out on a number of intimate gigs in her own fans houses
“For the release of Fortress I really wanted to do something that would embody the song and the message of the song. “Let’s build a fortress” is the strongest line for me and I decided to take this out to fans, to put together a very intimate set of gigs where instead of being on a stage in a venue which can sometimes be quite formal and indirect. I really wanted to be able to see everyone in the audience and be literally at arms length from people who connect through music, to be able to fully engage and have them involved as part of the whole set. The phrase “let’s build a fortress” being everyone in the room altogether, not just watching the show but being a part of the whole process, a real community feeling”
