Out of Michigan, Modern Mal are a collective of musicians, including Rachel Brooke and Savannah Buist from The Accidentals. Wild Heart is their new and debut video, and features an intriguing blend of lilting country vocals over Tiki style exotica and a blues beat. The video features vintage clips of circus performers, burlesque beauty queens, and hula dancers.
“Would you love me if I had a Wild Heart too?” is the wistful refrain, seemingly a regret for loss to a more adventurous suitor, and sung so it almost feels a threat. Because we don’t know much about Modern Mal yet, it’s not clear if having a Wild Heart will end well or not for this rival. All we do know, on past form, you don’t want to be on the wrong side of Brooke – see also what happened in The Barnyard, a typically vicious murder ballad from her back catalogue.
