Never one to let things lie, and coming towards the end of a run of 25 intimate shows, playing to just 40 people per night at New York’s world-famous Park Avenue Armory with his band the The XX, Jamie XX has somehow found time to record a new single for 12″ vinyl release on May 5th via Young Turks Records.
The double AA-sided single features two songs, Girl and Sleep Sound, and is the first solo release from Jamie since 2011, when he released his debut single, Far Nearer. It was also the year he worked on his collaborative reinterpretations of the late Gil Scott-Heron’s I’m Here Now.
Sleep sound opens with these gently cascading synth lines, which grow into these large sweeping brushes of sound, and then the beat comes in, with these gentle vocal sounds added. Ever evolving, the tune twists and turns with these warm chords added and the vocal snatches growing into full blown harmonies. It’s melodic, evocative electronica at its best.
