I’ve just stood in the extreme cold and watched my son, seemingly unbothered by the wind and temperature, play football. I’m between naps on the sofa, and badly in need of some energy. Cue my email bleeping with the very thing. It’s Drake’s lean, mean attitude driven machine of a single of the same name, taken from his recent mixtape ‘If you’re reading this it’s too late’, with added magic sprinkled over it from elusive L.A. producer DJ Whiiite, aka Chris White, who says of the track “Heard the original of this while on a run in Santa Monica, and starting hearing sounds and builds to flip it into a more club friendly meaner version.”
It opens with this stiffled shuffle and a buzzing bassline, before Drake lays down his rhymes, cut up but still making sense by Whiiite. Its replaced by this bubbling accompaniment, with tight pads and cymbals splattering all over the background, as Whiiite adds a euphoric house ebb and flow about it, without ever realising a true climax. Instead he plasters this bass vibe all over the track, cutting up vocal samples and the like along the way.
This is the sound of your summer.
