Modern Nature make music about today’s landscape. Tunes weave within tunes, rhythms tumble and motor, voices nest comfortably in the songs. After their opening statement, the EP ‘Nature’ and their intoxicating, much loved debut album ‘How to live’, they are set to intrigue once more with a new mini LP ‘Annual’ set for release via Bella Union on 5th June.
And if that isn’t uplifting enough the band follow ‘Flourish’ their first taster from the new record, with a second sample ‘Harvest’, available to steam and watch now. Featuring Kayla Cohen of Itasca on lead vocals the track continues Modern Nature’s collective approach to music making. Jack Cooper (previous projects Mazes and Ultimate Painting) remains at the epi-centre of the band on the new album but this time around Will Young takes a Beak break, Jeff Tobias (sax) steps forward and Jim Wallis (percussion) dives in.
With the track listing on ‘Annual’ including titles like ‘Dawn’, ‘Mayday’, ‘Halo’ or ‘Ritual’ and inspiration that Cooper says draws from ‘living on the edge of London and the Epping Forest’, you can sense that this is real organic music. The minimal sound of plenty in the best Talk Talk or Pentangle tradition.
