With their debut track ‘Been Through Hell’ and 2nd single ‘Drink About It’ both going straight to the top of the iTunes Country Charts, we at Backseat thought it was time to find out a little bit more about this blazing new country duo.
Give us a potted history of the band
Savannah I met Martin about a year and a half ago on an app called Clubhouse where he was holding a nightly room through his company called The Songwriting Academy. I loved tuning in and hearing him and his mentors talk all things songwriting and music.
One night they opened the room for anyone listening in to showcase our songs. I played one of my songs and Martin really liked what I was doing and invited me to session on a song of his! After that, he had a sneaking suspicion that Cat and I would sound good together and decided to plan a songwriting session between the three of us.
We wrote three songs in one night. We met up again and did the exact same thing. One thing led to another and we had an album of songs. We named ourselves The Wanted Sisters, booked our first gig, got three number one singles, and got invited to play a festival with BBC Introducing. We’ve put a lot of hard work in but it’s all a bit surreal how fast it’s happening actually!
Who inspired you to start making music
Cat I grew up in a house with crackly vinyl’s always on the go, an innocent obsession with Disney Fantasia and a fascination of family friend’s music videos.
Savannah My parents inspired me for sure. My mom saw something in me when I was young and always pushed me to follow my passion and my dad is a writer and author, so always has taught me the value of the humanities and arts. My grandma was a singer in clubs as a young woman and my uncle was in a pretty prevalent punk band so ever since I was young, music was very much around and encouraged.
And the one or maybe two records that inspired you artistically
Savannah I’m a huge Willie Nelson fan and I think “Crazy” was perfectly written. And the performance by Patsy Cline on that record gets me every time. I’m a fan of unique voices and great storytellers.
If you’re trying to explain who you sound like to someone that’s never heard you, what do you say
Cat If Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson were young women in Daisy Duke hotpants who rocked up at your back yard just to start stomping their feet and sing heart-hollering sky punching songs with mischievous smiles on their faces …. THAT!
Tell us about your new track
Cat American Sunshine was inspired by my nickname for sister Sav and it’s jangly mandolas, guitars and high energy vocals bring Summer into your life wherever you are! Prepare to be lifted into the bright blue skies with this feel-good catchy Americana tune.
Where can we get hold of it
Cat ‘American Sunshine’ will be available from 06th September across all major streaming platforms.
Tell us how you write
Savannah Each song is different! We start a song in every way – from Martin strumming on his guitar and singing a melody, from Cat reading ideas she’s written down, to me just throwing melodies around. One idea even sparked from a book I was reading. We find inspiration everywhere which is really nice 🙂
Tell us about your live show What would be your dream gig
Savannah Our live show is all about sharing an amazing night with our audience. If we can get everyone up and dancing and singing along we will be happy! Dream gig would be a show at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville where Dolly Parton comes out and sings with us.
What can we expect from you in the near future
Both More sassy singles. More stomping stage shows. Some cheeky videos…and there might just be an album coming but we’ll have to get to know you better to give you the inside scoop.
Tell us your favourite records that are rocking your headphones / tour bus / stereo
Savannah I’m currently listening nonstop to Sierra Ferrell! You can also find me listening to Dolly, Willie and John 🙂
