Live Review: YEEVS Wrap Up Sparkling ‘The Borderline, Thereabouts’ Tour With The Electorate at Botany View Hotel – Gadigal/Sydney, 30.11.24

The Botany View Hotel offered an intimate stage for a memorable close to YEEVS’ album tour, celebrating ‘The Borderline, Thereabouts’, with special guests The Electorate on Saturday. The night highlighted the close-knit, community-driven charm of Gadigal/Sydney’s live music scene, where small venues regularly host moments that linger long after the last note fades.

The Electorate kicked things off with a warm and confident set, their sound balancing nostalgic melodies with a contemporary edge. Their latest single, ‘Face of a Giant’—their first in five years—felt like a signal flare of renewed creativity. Layered guitars and rich harmonies painted vivid sonic landscapes, like scenes from a midnight road trip, both familiar and thrillingly unpredictable.

Known for their quintessentially raw, earnest, and tinged-with-a-hint-of-twang sound—YEEVS have a knack for drawing you in. They began softly, addressing the crowd with an easy charm. But as the first notes rang out, the chatter stopped, replaced by an attentive hush that spoke volumes about their ability to captivate.

The setlist leaned heavily into their latest album, but it was ‘Tradition’, a tender and unreleased track, that left the deepest impression. Its bittersweet melody and heartfelt delivery stilled the room, a moment of collective pause and reflection. At one point, the band shared a quirky anecdote from their Canberra stop, where the audience opted for snapping instead of clapping. Sydney followed suit, filling the air with soft snaps—a delightful collective gesture that felt like the beginning of an inside joke among friends.

It’s this blend of humour, humility, and sheer talent that makes YEEVS so magnetic. Their songs are a mix of grit and grace that captures a distinctly Australian atmosphere—raw yet inviting, like a summer breeze through bushland. In the snug confines of the Botany View, they delivered a performance that was as much about connection as it was about sound.
