Live Review: The Boo Radleys – Sheffield Corporation 30/10/2023

Words and Pictures by Phil Wright

Monday 30th of October at The Corporation in Sheffield, was a trip down memory lane, taking me back to the 90’s and a double headlining gig with the Boo Radley’s and Cud.

The Boo Radley’s, (who took their name from caricature in the 1960 novel ‘To Kill a Mocking Bird’), opened the night with ‘I hang suspended’, from their 1993 album ‘Giant Steps’.

Things was running smoothly until Tim Brown had a technical issue with his bass, or as Tim described it, “Hold on! My bass is f***ed!“. This left Sice, (Simon Rowbottom), to take over with an impromptu solo number.

This was the first time the band had played Sheffield in 30 years, and what a time to make their comeback with the release of their 8th studio Album ‘Eight’.

The album has some amazing tracks like ‘Sometimes I sleep’ and “Way I am’.

The 300 plus crowd was loving every minute of the night, even when technical struggles for the band struck again, this time it was Sice with a microphone issue.

For the remainder of the gig the technical glitches stayed away and the rest of the night went without a hitch. The final number brought the house down, with the crowd-pleasing ‘Wake Up Boo’ which had everyone singing and jumping around.

Talking to the band after the show I was telling them how much I loved the gig to which Sice asked “What? Even with all the f**k ups?” I replied “Yes, especially with the f**k ups as it showed that the band really care about the music played and also play live, not like a lot of others.”
