US post-metal/blackgaze kings, Deafheaven, made their long-awaited appearance at The Odeon Theatre for Hobart’s iconic Dark Mofo Festival on Thursday evening to another sold-out venue.
Booked for the festival for 2022, the band had to cancel as a member of their team was diagnosed with a case of Covid-19, showing how the pandemic continues to impact live music over three years on from the first cases.
However, the band had promised to make the journey back to Australia, and return they did, to an adoring crowd of metal, and hard rock fans eager to hear what was supposed to have happened the year before – that is, a full playthrough of their seminal album, Sunbather for its’ 10th anniversary.
To the roars of the crowd, dynamic frontman, George Clarke took to the stage and attacked the songs with gusto, while the twin guitar attack of Kerry McCoy and Shiv Mehra produced the sparkling moments above the pounding rhythms set up by bass player Chris Johnson and the drums of Daniel Tracy.
As has become popular over more recent years, the band played the entirety of their album from front to back, and delivered an outstanding show, one which had been keenly anticipated by the band’s many fans, many who had come from interstate.
