The Fuzz Island Fest at Altar Bar in Hobart last Saturday night unveiled (possibly) one of the best international bands you have never seen or heard before. Put on and hosted by Psychedelic Salad Records, six bands played right through to the early hours of Sunday morning in what is hoped to be an annual (or possibly even a bi-annual) event.
Headlining this noise extravaganza was Japanese stoner rock outfit, Bahboon, who were sponsored by Tasmania’s own Psychedelic Salad Records. They were more than ably supported by a mix of five of Tasmania’s finest independent rock bands – the up-and-coming Geneslave, progressive psychedelic rockers Legal Noise and Glitchcraft, sludge favourites Mountains of Madness and the high-flying Spooky Eyes.
All of the support bands played great sets, and I must admit to thinking that Bahboon would have to be extremely good to top the quality of the music that had come before them. However, within a very short time of taking the stage, my slightest of doubts were completely dispelled as the band that blew the house down with a thunderous set which had everybody’s jaws dropping.
To top their performance off, it was great to see the excitement and love on the faces of the band members, as the crowd fully embraced them and the band’s full-on style, and rocked with great enthusiasm along with every pounding riff and note coming from the stage.
If they ever end up in your neck of the woods, do yourself a favour!!
