Live Review + Photo Galleries: Grinspoon steamroll their way into Hobart on their ‘Whatever Whenever Wherever’ tour supported by Press Club

On the back of the August release of their 8th album, Whatever, Whatever, Grinspoon continued their Whatever, Whenever, Wherever tour at The Odeon Theatre here in Hobart on Friday night.

Almost 30 years have elapsed since the band became an entity in Lismore, New South Wales, and despite the highs and lows that they have endured throughout that time, the band still manage to deliver their high-octane brand. The new material from Whatever, Whatever sits in really well with the band’s back catalogue, making it hard to believe there was a 12 year gap between albums.

Kicking off with the brilliant Unknown Pretenders and followed by the banger, DCx3, the band powered their way through a long set smattered with tracks from the latest album, as well as all of their crowd favourites from across the breadth of their storied catalogue. Songs such as Rock Show, Lost Control, Hard Act To Follow (along with the band’s thanks to their tour-wide supports, Press Club), Chemical Heart, a rousing rendition of INXS’s Don’t Change and even a duet featuring Phil Jamieson and Nat Foster (from Press Club) ensured the 1000+ crowd went home fully sated and full of rock & roll goodness.

As always, mercurial lead singer, Phil Jamieson was on fire. One of Australia’s great frontmen, he was backed by the grand talents of Pat Davern on guitar, Joe Hansen (and his signature wide stance) on bass, and Kristian Hopes on drums.

Grinspoon were more than ably supported by Melbourne punk rock outfit, Press Club. It is hard to take your eyes off of the dynamic, and highly athletic performance put in by frontwoman Natalie Foster at each and every Press Club gig, as she prowls the stage like a caged tigress. Greg Rietwyk on guitar, provided plenty of beautifully sonic artistry, while the band’s sound is rounded out by bassist Iain MacRae and drummer Frank Lees pounding out the relentless rhythms for which Press Club are otherwise renowned.
