Live Review: Incubus – o2 Apollo, Manchester 02/10/22

This Sunday marked the final stop of the UK headline tour for Incubus following shows in Birmingham and back to back gigs at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

The California rock band, formed in 1991, are stalwarts of the rock genre whether through their alt-rock sound or the nu-metal tag of their breakthrough album ‘Make Yourself’. Incubus consists of the original line-up of members Brandon Boyd (vocals), Mike Einziger (guitar, piano, backing vocals), José Pasillas II (drums), Chris Kilmore (turntables, keyboards), and Ben Kenney (bass).

As the lights drop and the members take their positions, Chris Kilmore opens with his spinning and scratching before the band launch into ‘Nice To Know You’. Smashing through hit after hit from their back catalogue the band choose to pay homage to the older fan favourites with ‘Karma, Come Back’ being the only recent release that was played with the bulk of the set being from the hit albums ‘Make Yourself’ (1999) and ‘Morning View’ (2001).

With the evening punctuated with patterned backing visuals and smoke aplenty, the ever energetic frontman Brandon charismatically conducts the crowd through the gentle melodic tracks to rousing anthemic ones. Guitarist Mike Einziger performs an acoustic set during ‘Mexico’ and the band plays a snippet of The Doors hit ‘Riders On A Storm’ during ‘Are You In?’ much to the fans delight.

The crowd are swept along through the night and whether they are holding their phone torches aloft, cheering the band on or raising the roof as they join in with encore track ‘Drive’, it’s safe to say everyone has had a great night and are looking forward to the next Incubus visit to Manchester!
