Tkay Maidza, the Zimbabwe-born, Australian-raised singer, rapper, and songwriter, has solidified her place as one of contemporary music’s most dynamic and versatile artists. Known for her eclectic blend of hip-hop, pop, and electronic music, Tkay has captivated audiences worldwide with her powerful vocals, energetic performances, and innovative sound. Her extensive discography includes hits like ’24K’, ‘Ring-a-Ling’, and ‘Silent Assassin’ with Flume.
The Art Gallery of NSW welcomed Tkay last night as they continue to celebrate the annual Volume Festival of contemporary music and sound art, held in the heart of Eora/Sydney. The event is currently being held in the gallery’s new Naala Badu building, specifically in a breathtaking and unique venue known as “The Tank”. This venue, a former Second World War oil tank, offers an unparalleled atmosphere for live music.
As you descend the spiral staircase into The Tank, you find yourself in a massive, bunker-like space adorned with giant projections, support beams, and a single cement slab serving as the stage. Despite the expansive area, the design allowed the crowd to stand almost eye-level with the artists, creating an intensely intimate experience. Tkay Maidza’s performance in this extraordinary setting was nothing short of electrifying. Over the course of the night, she commanded the stage with a powerful yet gracious presence, sharing her extensive discography with a captivated audience. An absolutely stunning work of art.
The echoey acoustics of the bunker, combined with dynamic lighting and her talented backup dancers, made the event truly unforgettable. Among the highlights of her set were fan favourites, including her stunning cover of the Pixies’ classic ‘Where Is My Mind’. The Tank, with its unique ambience and world-class facilities, has proven to be an exciting addition to Sydney’s cultural landscape, making it a must-visit venue.
The Art Gallery of NSW’s Volume Festival continues to draw in impressive headlining acts, including Andre 3000, Kim Gordon, Flume, and Black Country royalty Frank Yamma and Roger Knox, promising more unforgettable performances in this exceptional setting.
