Eora/Sydney’s indie rock trio, STUMPS, continues to blaze a trail across the nation on their much-anticipated national tour, celebrating the release of their sophomore album, ‘Arcadia‘. In a testament to their burgeoning success, ‘Arcadia’ held a coveted spot in the Top 4 on the Australian ARIA Album chart, nestled alongside the likes of renowned icons Troye Sivan and Cold Chisel. If that isn’t a resounding testament to their trajectory, then what is?
Comprising the formidable talents of Kyle Fisher, Merrick Powell, and Jonny Dolan, STUMPS boasts a distinctive amalgamation of indie, dance, pop, and rock vibes. Yet, at its core, their music resonates as the epitome of melancholic indie rock, evoking echoes reminiscent of the likes of Bloc Party and Two Door Cinema Club.
Notable milestones, including performances at festivals such as Lost Paradise and NYE On The Hill have marked STUMPS’ recent years. They’ve graced the stage in support of esteemed Australian acts like Ball Park Music and The Temper Trap. Hit single ‘Mt. Pleasant’, even found itself as the backdrop to the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics Australian broadcast.
The stage was set for an unforgettable night at Factory Theatre as the evening unfolded with captivating performances from several esteemed supporting acts. Hailing from Tarndanya/Adelaide, The Tullamarines kicked off the proceedings with their infectious indie-pop melodies. Gadigal/Sydney’s own indie-rock sensations, GRXCE, followed suit with their signature live-show electricity, while Mulubinba/Newcastle’s RAAVE TAPES brought their innovative blend of club-ready indie rock.
As the lights dimmed, the unmistakable sound of “OH SHIT (oh shit)” reverberated through the venue, eliciting a collective surge of excitement from the audience. With a playful nod to Fergie’s ‘London Bridge’, STUMPS took to the stage amidst a chorus of cheers and applause, ready to enrapture their devoted fan base.
This marked my first time witnessing STUMPS in all their glory and from the onset, it was abundantly clear that the band exuded a rare, truly precious spirit that is inevitably magnified by their passionate and loving fan base. Kyle, Merrick, and Jonny delivered a performance that was nothing short of spellbinding, their musicianship impeccable and their camaraderie infectious.
Throughout the evening, moments of sheer magic unfolded as the crowd sang their cherished hits loud and in unison, seizing the spotlight as they took a turn at serenading the band. Kyle, visibly moved by the outpouring of affection, paused on several occasions, deeply touched by the experience.
With ‘Arcadia‘ serving as their most recent triumph, the future looks brighter than ever for this trailblazing trio. With hearts full and spirits soaring, we bid adieu to the unforgettable evening, eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the storied journey of STUMPS.
They will be playing their final show of the tour April 26th, at Mojo’s Fremantle.
