The Metro Theatre was alive this weekend as the Melbourne Ska Orchestra rolled into town for The Outlaws and Offbeats tour, and they certainly didn’t disappoint. A crowd eager for dance and rhythm filled the room, setting the stage for a night where standing still simply wasn’t an option.
Opening the night was Chutney, an Eora/Sydney-based klezmer fusion band that has recently dropped their debut album, ‘Ajar.’ They brought a refreshing blend of sounds that felt like a world tour in a single set, effortlessly marrying klezmer with contemporary beats.
Following was Naarm/Melbourne’s Playlunch, who describe themselves as “bogan funk”. Their set was a nostalgia trip for anyone who lived through the ’90s or early 2000s, complete with a cheeky track about Blue Light Discos and a revamped cover of the famous ‘Soupe Opera.’ They’re set to bring their playful energy to Meanjin/Brisbane this week for Bigsound.
Then came the main event: Melbourne Ska Orchestra. These ska legends gave one hell of a performance, cranking out fan favourites from across their discography. Tracks like their famous ‘Get Smart’ cover and ‘Good Days Bad Days’ filled the room, blending with their latest single, ‘John Wayne.’ The band’s energy spilled into the crowd, making it all feel like a big celebration.
The Orchestra also paid special tributes to James Brown and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, sharing their roots and influences in a way that felt genuine and heartfelt. A shout-out to Eastside Radio‘s King Keith brought a touch of local pride, reinforcing that this night was all about community and music.
Not a moment passed without movement as the audience grooved and jived, packed tightly, all swaying to the relentless beat of ska. It’s rare to see a room so united in rhythm – there wasn’t a person there afraid to let loose and dance.
As the tour continues throughout Australia, there’s plenty more chances to catch the Melbourne Ska Orchestra in action. Upcoming shows include Theatre Royal in Castlemaine on September 14, The River in Margaret River on September 20, Freo Social in Fremantle on September 21, 170 Russell in Melbourne on October 4, and Hindley Street Music Hall in Adelaide on October 19.
