Live Review & Gallery: Mayatrix & The Psychics Support The Cult for a Night of Gothic Rock Majesty – Gadigal Land/Sydney, 02.12.24

The Enmore Theatre feels like it was made for nights like this. Its moody, timeless charm provided the perfect backdrop for an evening of atmospheric rock, led by the legendary Cult and supported by Boorloo/Perth’s Mayatrix & The Psychics, who delivered a set so gothic and otherworldly it felt as if they’d drawn it from some ancient, mystical source.

From the moment Mayatrix & The Psychics stepped into the dim glow of the stage, the crowd was transported into their shadowy, psychedelic realm. Frontwoman Moana Mayatrix is nothing short of captivating – she is a mystic, a tempest. Her voice danced between spectral softness and guttural ferocity, carrying the band’s swirling blend of hypnotic textures and towering rock riffs into every corner of the theatre. It’s the kind of sound that makes the Enmore feel haunted—proof, perhaps, that its ghosts were already in waiting.

Tracks like their latest release ‘Black Moon Medicine’ were moody, thunderous, and dripping with cinematic tension. Guitarist Willow Fearns and bassist Yann Vissac created rich, brooding layers, while drummer Lochlan Hoffmann anchored the chaos with their man-made thunder. By the time their set ended, the crowd was caught somewhere between entranced and electrified. If you’re drawn to music that’s loud, primal, and steeped in gothic mystique, Mayatrix & The Psychics are a revelation waiting for you.

When The Cult took the stage, it was a seamless transition from one gothic force to another (cue some pre-set smudging). They delivered a show steeped in the dark, melodic brilliance that has defined their career. Songs like ‘Rain’ and ‘She Sells Sanctuary’ hit with timeless impact, and their newer material carried the same charm.

The combination of Mayatrix & The Psychics and The Cult made for an evening that was seeped in their signature ritual of sound and shadow. The pairing felt as though it was written in the stars or perhaps etched into some ancient spellbook.
