As I wait expectantly with thousands of fans for Conan Gray to take the stage at the ICC Sydney Theatre tonight, I can’t help but reflect on his meteoric rise from bedroom pop wunderkind to international sensation. Bursting onto the scene with his confessional YouTube videos and hauntingly relatable songs, Gray’s music speaks to the heartache and euphoria of youth. His debut album, ‘Kid Krow,’ catapulted him into the spotlight, his sophomore effort, ‘Superache,’ became his second Top 10 album on the US Billboard 200 Chart and charted in the top 10 in Australia. His third album, ‘Found Heaven,’ dropped earlier this year, rocketing him even further into the musical (heavenly) stratosphere.
Supporting Gray tonight is Kat Edwards, whose playful banter with the crowd sets a warm, intimate tone. Amid the chatter and laughter, a fan gifts her a bracelet, a token of the connection she effortlessly builds. Edwards leads the audience in a spirited rendition of Chapel Roan’s ‘Casual,’ her energy infectious. She pauses to offer some cheeky life advice: “Never date someone who is 10 years older than you,” she declares, segueing into a heartfelt performance of ‘Childish,’ a song drawn from her own experiences. With raw honesty, she shares a moment of vulnerability, revealing how close she came to giving up on music—until the serendipitous offer to join Gray on tour reignited her passion.
The crowd here tonight is a constellation of youth, adorned in friendship bracelets, stars are everywhere to be seen – on T-shirts, worn as earrings and painted on faces – shimmering under the venue lights like a galaxy in anticipation. Someone holds up a sign “Do you know any Koala facts?”
Lightning bolts slice through the air, heralding Gray’s entrance as the elaborate curtains sweep aside to reveal him standing on a raised platform, flanked by an all-female band. Gray is dressed in a dazzling silver crop top and pants, and wearing shades, he launches into ‘Fainted Love.’ Behind me, the audience’s shrieks reach sonic boom levels, a collective outburst of joy that feels like they’ve all found a piece of heaven tonight.
During a break between songs, Gray is informed that it’s someone’s birthday and he seamlessly bursts into “Happy Birthday,” turning the moment into a shared celebration. The atmosphere is light and playful, especially when someone shouts that he looks like Justin Bieber. Without missing a beat, Gray belts out a few lines from “Baby,” much to the delight of the audience. He spots the girl holding up the Koala sign and with a mischievous grin, quips about his recent encounter with the iconic Aussie animal, joking that he thinks that he may have caught chlamydia from it.
Gray will head to Adelaide next, go HERE for ticketing information.
