Live Review & Gallery: A Sharp Step Forward in Dance-Punk as Gut Health Releases Debut Album ‘Stiletto’ – The Lansdowne, Eora/Sydney, 25.10.24

Fresh from the release of their (highly, highly anticipated) debut album ‘Stiletto’ and a recent stint supporting Hiatus Kaiyote (in which Deb Pelser covered beautifully), Gut Health brought their unique brand of dance-punk-driven fervour to the Lansdowne on Friday.

The night began with G.U.N (Galvanic Unapologetic Noise), who set the tone with an immersive performance that could only be described as a collision of electronica, industrial noise, and a spectacle so engaging that blinking felt like a risk. Every aspect pulled the audience into an experience that felt closer to performance art than a traditional set. G.U.N is a powerful force and if they have something to say, you want to listen.

Eora-based Kidskin was up next, delivering a dark, electronic-heavy piece that seemed to hover somewhere between mysticism and digital hypnosis. They paired live mixes with a killer electronic drum set that brought an almost ritualistic feel to the room, invoking something close to ego-death for the audience.

When Gut Health took to the stage, the Lansdowne suddenly felt a few sizes too small for what was about to come. Vocalist Athina Uh Oh weaved between playful and severe, much like Karen O’s magnetic, ever-shifting stage presence. Athina has this unique ability to make every lyric, every gesture feel like it’s steeped in intent, bringing a tangible edge to their art that resonates with anyone within earshot.

Gut Health’s set was a fusion of post-punk grit and jazzy rhythms with each song from ‘Stiletto’ adding to the growing tension in the room, a layered experience that kept people on edge and always wanting more. The band poured every ounce of themselves into their performance; you could see it in the way the crowd responded, feeding off the energy. Tracks like ‘Cool Moderator’ and ‘Inner Norm’ were highlights, their lyrics sharp and the beat fast, embodying Gut Health’s unrelenting approach.

Gut Health embodies punk at its core, channelling a cultural pulse that feels unafraid, welcoming, and meticulously crafted with cause. They’re tapping into something potent and it’s thrilling to bear witness.
