Just moments before fans packed into the Hordern Pavilion to catch the iconic LA-Based pop duo LANY, news of the surprising American presidential election results had settled in, casting a creeping cloud of stunned silence across the city. But as the Pavilion lights dimmed and the first notes echoed, any heaviness gave way to a collective sense of release, if only temporarily.
Inside the sold-out Pavilion, the space looked transformed, with a catwalk extending from the stage and looping back, a high-value mosh area in the centre. From the moment fans entered, they held signs high, roses at the ready – even a plush doll of frontman Paul Klein made its way above the crowd. LANY’s adoring fans clearly came prepared to make the night their own.
Kicking things off was the Texas/Sydney-based band Culture Wars, who delivered a punchy, high-energy opening that ramped up the anticipation.
When LANY finally took the stage, the energy in the room shifted. For nearly two hours, they held nothing back, pouring their all into every beat, every note. The audience felt the collective sigh of relief, with each song pushing the heaviness of the day’s news a little further out of mind. Klein, visibly moved, seemed to channel the crowd’s intensity as fuel, turning what could’ve been a subdued night into a charged celebration. The production quality was undeniable – this was a show of stadium proportions packed into the Hordern, each visual and sound element meticulously crafted to elevate the night.
Roses were tossed onto the stage as Klein made his way above the crowd, taking his time to reach out to fans and bridgethe distance between artist and audience. Then, in an especially intimate moment, he paused at his keyboard, which sat surrounded in all directions and delivered a stunning solo.
Halfway through the set, Klein introduced a “special friend” to the crowd. To everyone’s surprise and delight, a young couple stepped onto the stage. The man dropped to one knee, proposing in front of a cheering audience. It was a scene straight from a movie – one of those rare, genuine moments that become part of a show’s lore.
Drummer Jake Clifford Goss took his own moment surrounded by the crowd as he played underneath the spotlight. As the set neared its end, Klein then plunged right into the crowd, meeting fans face-to-face. For those within arms’ reach, it was a dream come true, as Klein moved through the sea of fans, their ecstatic faces illuminated in the final beams of the night’s light show.
For many, it was a reminder that even on the toughest days, music can bring people together in ways that few other things can. LANY’s show was a release, a celebration, and a reminder of the power of connection in the face of uncertainty.
