Sparks fly as Bob Vylan make their triumphant return to Birmingham with the ‘Humble As The Sun’ tour
After seeing Bob Vylan a number of times during the festival season this Summer, when this tour was announced, I knew I wanted more and this show did not disappoint.
First up were Brighton’s 3 piece CLT DRP. Straight away you could see that these guys were fired up, from the heavy beats of Daphne’s drums, Scott’s dirty guitar riffs and lead singer Annie spitting lyrics with a smile on her face.
Having listened to these guys on streaming sites before the show, I was suprised how heavier they were live compared to their online songs – and it really works live.
Annie asks the audience before their last song “Did we win you over Birmingham?” which was met with loud resounding cheers of appreciation.
Next up following a live rendition of Backstreet Boys – ‘Backstreets Back’ out jumps rapper Hyphen. Wearing the shortest of shorts he goes straight into his set mixing catchy rhymes with a nice mix of drums and guitar.
Hyphen’s set is a joy to behold, with much audience interaction during the song ‘Marching Powder’ Hyphen isn’t afraid to shy away from the tough subjects in his songs, which is a testament to how well they are written and performed.
Ending his set with no voice, Hyphen gave it all, and should not be missed on this tour. – Go check him out on streaming sites today!!
The time was here for Bob Vylan to make their way to the stage, following a brief hype up to get the crowd pumped, Bobby kept the energy levels up with a nice warm up meditation and yoga session whilst Bobbie drummed to a hectic light show.
Following the warm up the duo went straight into ‘Reign’ from latest album ‘Humble as the Sun’ Next up was a personal favourite of mine from the album ‘GYAG’ A definite crowd pleasing tune.
It wasn’t long before Bobby was in the crowd, crowd surfing to the back of the venue whilst pockets of mosh pits opened up underneath him whilst Bobbie took centre stage with an impressive drum solo. Once he was safely back on stage and hydrated the duo went into another new track with ‘He’s a Man’
The stage was lit up with sparks and smoke during ‘Northern Line’ whilst the crowd opened up more pockets of mosh pits.
The popularity of Bob Vylan, is always a surprise to the duo, who talked about how they won’t get played on the radio and its through the support of other mediums that they are able to play to crowds the size of this.
Bob Vylan might be one of the most important bands in the UK right now, and these shows feel like the start of something much bigger for the duo.
