Outside, it’s the glaring heat of a spring day, inside the dimly-lit Factory Theatre’s indoor stage, Indonesia’s Grrrl Gang aren’t pulling their punches.
Formed in 2016, the band is made up of Angeeta Sentana on guitar and vocals, Akbar Rumandung on bass, and Edo Alventa on guitar. With their delirious mix of indie-pop and punk energy, Grrrl Gang are pummelling the audience.
Their powerful lyrics touch on themes such as feminism, mental health, and relationships with a raw honesty. It’s not hard to see why the trio are considered to be contenders. The band deliver a sonic uppercut, leaving the crowd on the ropes, knocked out by their raw rock power. It’s no wonder they were awarded a prestigious performance slot on the pandemic-induced online edition of SXSW 2021.
