South African band, Spoegwolf are currently on a tour of NZ and Australia and will be heading to the Netherlands, Ireland and the UK in July/August. There is an eager crowd at the Factory tonight waiting to see the band made up of Moskou du Toit (drums, percussion, vocals), Chris von Wielligh (guitar, piano), Albert van der Merwe (bass guitar, vocals, rap), and Danie du Toit (vocals, guitar), who are on their first tour of Australia. First up is Herman Kleinhans who delights the crowd with his own compositions and then leads the audience in singing some old folk songs. There is no break between the support and the main act. Spoegwolf join Kleinhans on stage for a song and then immediately explode into action. Known for their unique blend of Afrikaans rock and folk music and incendiary performances, the band soon has the crowd singing along to every word and up on their feet dancing. The way that du Toit, barefoot and frenetically stalking the stage, interacts with the audience is exhilarating and spiritual, he’s like an Afrikaans version of Bruce Springsteen. It’s an emotional rollercoaster as the band rips through their catalogue, from quieter songs to anthems, the audience exults in the church of Spoegwolf.
