Backseat Mafia hit Bootleggers last night, where the walls sweated and spirits soared for the launch of Postcolonial Blues, the fierce and phenomenal new single from Second Idol. The room was packed and with all proceeds from the night going to Médecins Sans Frontières, this was a gig with both brawn and brains.
First up were Bodywire, local fire-starters from Sydney’s inner west, who’ve been stirring up mosh pits and minds recently. Their sound is a snarling cocktail of alt-rock and indie grit, delivered with the kind of punk energy that feels like a bottle rocket going off in a dive bar.

Then came The All Mother, and honestly? You don’t forget a band like this. Genre-fluid in the best possible way, they lurched through post-punk, industrial, post-rock, and noise-rock like it was one extended fever dream.

But the night belonged to Second Idol. Playing behind a Palestinian flag, the band delivered a set that was equal parts brain and brawn—politically charged, musically tight, and emotionally seismic. Led by the magnetic Kate Farquharson, Second Idol are a band at the height of their powers, dishing out cerebral noise and feedback-drenched catharsis.
‘Postcolonial Blues’ isn’t just a single—it’s a statement. And last night’s performance proved that Second Idol are very much part of the conversation.
