Volume is a new festival of sound and vision at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, appearing tonight is Sampa the Great. Since the release of her critically acclaimed second album ’As above, so below’ in late 2022, Sampa The Great has been travelling the globe and breaking records with her Zambian band, solidifying her position as one of the world’s leading artists creating nuanced and original hip-hop and soul.
The art world and music enthusiasts alike converge at the renowned gallery, for a one-of-a-kind performance. Sampa and her dancers perform over the multiple elevations of the gallery. It’s a unique experience with the audience also split over three levels, completely enthralled by the spectacle of it all.
The acoustics of the Art Gallery, often reserved for hushed whispers and contemplative silences tonight has urban beats bouncing off its walls. Sampa’s music, rich with themes of self-discovery, cultural intersection, and the diasporic experience, seems to find kinship in the visual images that reside in this place.
Sampa the Great’s performance is not just a nod to the intersectionality of contemporary art and music, but also a celebration of cultural diversity, the power of narratives, and the shared human experience.
