Belle and Sebastian have returned to Australia after six years, three albums deeper into their discography. On this tour, they’re not just showcasing tracks from their latest, ‘Late Developers;’ they’re reaching back, dusting off fan favourites, and reminding everyone why their back catalogue still resonates.
First up tonight is Badly Drawn boy appearing alone on stage with an enthralling set as he regales the audience with anecdotes about his career and the times that his songs have been used for advertisements.
The Enmore Theatre is abuzz with anticipation, fans packed in tight, as they await Belle and Sebastian, (formed in Glasgow in 1996,) to make their appearance. The crowd is a surprising blend tonight—veteran fans mingling with a new wave of Gen Z devotees who scream the loudest as the band hits the stage. A large screen behind the band floods the space with dayglo colors, setting the scene. Stuart Murdoch is all kinetic energy, a blur of motion as he commands the stage with effortless charisma.
It’s no surprise that Belle and Sebastian have endured in the indie pantheon, their live shows a testament to why. As they tear through their set, band members effortlessly swap instruments and shift positions, creating a dynamic that’s both chaotic and utterly captivating. It’s this fluidity, this sense of play, that keeps their sound fresh and their fans endlessly coming back for more.
