Exclusive: James Holt records a three track session for Backseat Mafia

We were very taken with Bolton singer-songwriter James Holt’s recent single ‘Pendulum’, so we we’re absolutely delighted that he agreed to record an At Home Session for us here at Backseat Mafia. He’s recorded three tracks – Pendulum and recent single Mystery Girl bookend a lovely version of Albert Hammond’s It never rains in Southern California.

We wrote about the warm indie of Pendulum, which features the classic songwriting of Holt, and featured him playing every instrument on the recording except the drums. It also has The Coral’s James Skelly on production (and backing vocals) who describes Holt as being like ‘Scott Walker backed by Echo and the Bunnymen’.

Of the track, James said at the time, “The song is generally about the endless cycle of revenge. There are so many cool ideas that feed into the ‘Pendulum’ theme of the song, like the way the opening riff revolves back and forth around two chords and how the story ends where it began to create a narrative loop. It packs a punch and gets the point across in so few words, I like songs like that.”

So pull up a chair and let James Holt wash over you for nearly nine minutes. Oh, and like and share and (please) subscribe. We’ve got some amazing sessions coming your way very soon…
