Tokyo producer Hoshina Anniversary has always been a player on the scene, developing his self-branded ‘Watechno’ style, blending together traditional Japanese instrumentation with Chicago and Detroit house/techno, which has seen him release music on a range of labels including ESP Institute, Young Marco’s Safe Trip and Amsterdam-based MUSAR Recordings.
His latest EP, released on MUSAR sees him switch to the Shifting Gears guise (named after Johnny Hammonds 1975 Gears album) for the record, titled Evil.
We’re absolutely delighted that Hoshina agreed to create a takeover mix for us, and even more so that contained within is a little glimpse of his upcoming work, with a track called Sikibu, which showcases his jazz and musical sensibilities, pulling chords all over the place in a delicious angular melody. Elsewhere are edits and remixes, a handful from the man himself, of some big names – Miles Davis, TOTO, Stevie Wonder and Weather Report all feature.
