The Breakdown
After delighting us with the two singles ‘Stories Of Strange Woman’ and ‘Blackmoss’, fuzz rock quartet Scruffy Bear unleash their epic EP ‘Face The Rain’.
When you have a singer like Georgy Eaton then starting the EP with a lung full is the way to go. Haven kicked off the first track ‘Stories Of Strange Woman’ the band settled down to the funk edged blues rocker with a nifty riff before the guitar takes off with some fancy fretboard work during the chorus from Jack.
‘Magic At Our Fingertips’ The track starts off slow but soon becomes a doom-filled monster with fuzzed filled guitars on the chorus. The gentle spoken middle 8 leads into a smoking solo in true blues style as it starts slow before blowing up.
Continuing with the bluesy doom-esque heaviness, ‘Blackmoss’ features another huge foot-stomper of a riff on this hugely infectious track. The calm comes with the middle 8 that slows things down before catapulting the track with another superb piece of guitar wizardry.
‘Solace’ sees Georgy give one hell of a performance on this laid back rocker. Starting all slow and brooding this is the track that cements the band as one of the ones to watch. The track has a real cool groove to it with as it flows through quiet and loud moments as the band build the track into a full out rock masterpiece. A real strong track from the band to showcase what they can do.
They have a superb sound and the whole EP benefits from the excellent production and with Eaton’s vocals or Jacks guitar prowess, the tracks sizzle with the bands magic. It’s not all about the front line though as the solid backbone courtesy of Sass and Ryan keeps the whole band tight and grounded. The band wouldn’t be the same without them.
The band have all the right ingredients, and this EP is proof they know how to mix them up and come together to create something really special. My only complaint; not long enough. An album is very much needed from these guys.
