EP Review: HollowKin – Confessions & Failures

A pretty new band by most standards HollowKin started in 2023 but since then the hard working quintet have making some fairly big waves on the live scene and are now ready to make some even bigger waves with their debut EP Confessions & Failures

The EP doesn’t really start till the second track, ‘A Pilgrimage,’ a track dripping with heavy slabs of emotion that hits as hard as the aural assault from the guitars. James Steaton-Pritchard giving a hell of a performance of the brooding backing from the rest of the band. The clever mixture of clean and guttural vocals is joined by the piercing bass/drums combo, more slamming than piercing, to be honest, to really hammer that emotive power home.

Now you are opened up and in the mood ‘Leech’ comes along and tenderises you properly. This is where the magic happens. Heavy, heavy thanks to the drums of Dan Ford. Keeping things simple yet dramatic complementing the duo attack of both DJ Hussey and Beau Stevens as they bring a down pour of riff after riff.

Somehow the band have managed to go even heavier with the pulsating ‘The Devil In Your Garden’. A metal masterpiece that doesn’t let up with the barrage or ear cavity abuse. After the barrage of abuse, the band may as well completely finish the job with ‘In Heresy’. Akin to a stomp to the head, the track goes in for the kill after the previous tracks just toyed with the idea. Here Ford plays the clever trick he has been using throughout. Completely stopping to allow the music to breath before bringing the walls down when needed.

In total, what HollowKin have done here is create one of the finest band introductions in a long time. there is something going on for these guys to sound this good after such a short time together. The tracks are well formed and well performed demonstrating the innate musical ability and technicality they have between the five of them.
