The Breakdown
Coming from a space of beat driven alt-electronica, the new EP from Heijmat Echoes Or Solace sees the Dutch producer move further into the realms of ambient experimentation with swells of emotionally driven electronics and some beautiful, cinematic soundscapes. The project of acclaimed producer Huub Reijnders (Oscar and the Wolf, The Subs, Jack Parow, Kraak & Smaak, Merol), Heijmat has already gained widespread acclaimed, and the new EP highlights why.
Opening with the haunting sirens of ‘Horizon’ (featuring LudoWic), the EP quickly sets a emotive tone. Gradually introducing a pulse through a plucky arpeggiator, the track slowly layers piano, bass and washes of ambience. Building a sense of momentum, the track adds a pillowy kick before bursting into a truly jaw dropping, spine tingle inducing crescendo. As cinematic as it is emotive and intimate, the track highlights both Heijmat’s ability as a producer as well as his ear for musicality.
Elsewhere on the EP ‘Severance’ with Naber leans into a futuristic, dystopian haze which would fit comfortably on the soundtrack for Stranger Things, whilst lead single ‘Don’t Run Away’ offers contract with the EPs most straight forward offering. Ambient electronica but met with driving beats and a catchy lead vocal (curtesy of guest vocalist KW Toering), the track builds a subtle and atmospheric electronic backdrop under the gentle yet catchy lead vocals which give the swell of electronics a radiant central focal point.
Building throughout, the tracks swelling sub bass gives a warming rumble as some beautifully placed, and meticulously produced, vocal samples dance around the soundscape giving a sense of freedom.
Closing with the gradually building Arpeggiator and expansive reverbs of ‘Resonance’, Heijmat ends the EP hammering home his move towards the realm of Jon Hopkins.
A really beautifully constructed EP with subtly, melancholic depth and heaps of musicality, the new EP from Heijmat is a splendour and showcases what a talented artist he has become in his own right.
