The Breakdown

Circa Waves’ latest album doesn’t break new ground, but it doesn’t need to. Packed with uplifting indie rock anthems, it radiates warmth and joy. Inspired by Kieran Shudall’s personal experiences, it’s a celebration of life, resilience, and the band’s signature sound.

Circa Waves return with their latest album, a collection of feel-good indie rock anthems that play to their strengths. While they don’t attempt to reinvent the wheel, they deliver exactly what fans have come to love – big choruses, infectious energy, and a warm, uplifting vibe. This record is a celebration, a reflection of frontman Kieran Shudallss recent experiences, and a reminder to appreciate life’s moments.

The album comes in the wake of a significant personal event for Shudall, who underwent emergency heart surgery in 2023. That experience has clearly shaped the tone of the record, filling it with a newfound appreciation for life and a sense of joy that radiates from every track. Rather than turning to darker, introspective themes, Circa Waves have chosen to channel their emotions into something uplifting, crafting an album that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable.

Musically, while there’s nothing groundbreaking here, the band stick to what they do best – writing damn fine indie rock anthems. The album kicks off with the pulsating ‘American Dream’, a driven and persuasive opener with soaring riffs and a singalong chorus. It’s quickly followed by the synth-tinged melancholy of ‘Like You Did Before, which brings a touch of introspection while still maintaining their signature energy. ‘We Made It’ then rounds out the opening trio with its warm, familiar feel – like slipping into a favorite old sweatshirt.

Lyrically, the album balances themes of reflection and optimism. Le Bateau boasts undeniable hooks that make it an instant standout, while Hold It Steady adds a fleeting moment of sadness before the band shifts gears once again. The bright and bouncy Let’s Leave Together brings the mood back up, radiating a carefree joy that encapsulates the album’s overall spirit. Rather than dwelling on past struggles, Circa Waves choose to embrace the present, offering anthems of resilience and gratitude.

Ultimately, this album is a celebration of life and music, wrapped in the familiar warmth of Circa Waves’ signature sound. No, it doesn’ t break new ground, but it doesn’ t need to. Instead, it delivers exactly what it sets out to: a collection of indie rock tracks bursting with energy, heart, and joy. After everything, Shudall is simply happy to be alive, and this record spreads that joy in the best way Circa Waves know how.
