Don’t you just love it when one of your friends shares a song and video with you on Facebook that makes you sit up and listen?? Well, that’s what happened to me last week when Ummagma’s new release ‘Rotation’ popped into my newsfeed.
French filmmaker Bulle Plexiglass contributed footage from the film ‘The End’ and the result is a surreal, dreamy and sometimes scary video, which reflects the song perfectly. Fans of Stereolab, Curve, Lush and Broadcast should definitely take note!
Confidently, Ummagma released a double A-side single on December 9 via Emerald & Doreen Recordings. The second track ‘Live and Let Die’ is not a McCartney cover version, but is an even noisier affair than ‘Rotation’ with epic guitars and wicked drums. Shauna’s beautifully warm voice is the perfect juxtaposition for this tune and, I think, is reflected in the video as the butterflies appear to soften the industrial landscape.
This Canadian-Ukraine dreamgaze duo of Shauna McLaron and Alexs Kretov have been making waves since they exploded on the underground scene in 2012 with their first two LPs ‘Antigravity’ and ‘Ummagma’. They also won the Alternative Eurovision in 2013 and two awards at the Australian Independent Music Video Awards.
To keep you going for now, if you head to their soundcloud page http://www.soundcloud.com/ummagma you can treat your ears to around 20 free downloads.
For the two tracks mentioned above, they are available through major online music platforms, including iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/rotation-single/id739253796.
